Add-Ins are used in WinRunner to load functions specific to the particular add-in to the memory. While creating a script only those functions in the add-in selected will be listed in the function generator and while executing the script only those functions in the loaded add-in will be executed else WinRunner will give an error message saying it does not recognize the function.

Though above answer is correct to some extent, but not full. I would like add a bit more then that.

For example, i have a mobile which is having Infrared facility. Now i want to use my mobile as remote control to TV. We will install the remote software in our mobile and we will use it. Now for Mobile , Remote software is a plub in , to extend this example, now i want to use the same software for VCD also. So remote control sw company will provide a pulgin to install so that it will work for VCD too.

The same, Winrunner supports various type of applications, example java, vb , mainframes. In case if our application is java , we need a java plug in for that, so that winrunner can understand the objects present in java applications. Example styple sheets or text boxes in java.
If the application Standalone vb application, we need a diff plubin for that. In case now developed a application on X technlogy, then Mercury (now it called HP) will provide a X techno plug in to winrunner so that it will work for our application.

That is the reason winrunner 7 will not work for .net application, where as winrunner 8 and qtp works for .net. The reason is, win7 doest not have plugin for .net.

Hope you are clear.

Please someone correct we if i am wrong.
